Peter the Great visited The Netherlands in 1699 to learn about shipbuilding and its flag through him influenced the civil ensign. There was also the coat of arms of the Duchy of Moscow, being red with Saint George (from 1730), having white armour, riding a white horse, wearing a blue cape and holding a blue shield, as he defeated the dragon. This tricolour became the official flag of Russia on 7th May 1883 until the Bolsheviks took power in November 1917. From then on it was surpressed under Communism until it became the official flag of the Russian state on 21 August 1991 whilst the coup attempt against the Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev was taking place. On 22nd August the Russian state President Boris Yeltsin waved the flag from the top of a tank. The coup collapsed and in celebration a huge cloth like the flag was carried by crowds through Moscow and the white, blue and red flag was raised over the Russian Supreme Soviet. On 25 December 1991 it was raised on top of the Kremlin, the day before the USSR officially ceased to exist.
Below is the flag used for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

James I from 1603 was the first monarch of both Scotland and England. The flag that ships adopted was a combination of the blue diagonal cross of St Andrew and the red horizontal and vertical cross of St George. Signing himself as Jacques, the flag became known as the Union Jack. With the Act of Union of England and Scotland in 1707, Queen Anne approved this new flag. The white border around the St George cross stops the two crosses from touching and therefore keeps the nations distinct. Additionally, the jack staff is a mast which holds a small flag used by vessels for signalling. Therefore, by custom, at sea the flag is the Union Jack whereas on land it is the Union Flag. The Union Flag was only ever the national flag by custom but is a naval flag by law and therefore illegal for a civilian ship to fly it or the cross of St George (the flag of an admiral).
